Import and Export of a glossary

Glossary Import

If you already have a glossary created out of Smartcat, for example, an Excel file, you can import all the terms at once, so there is no need to enter each term manually.

Uploading template

Surprisingly, the easiest way to import a glossary is to create a glossary with one term in Smartcat beforehand and export it. The exported Excel file will serve as a template for uploading. It will make you sure that the structure of the file matches the one of the glossary that you created in Smartcat, so no error will occur. Copy terms, their translations, and other information from your glossary to preset fields of the template and import it back.

To import the file, on the all-terms page hit the Upload button. In the window opened, hit Add.

Select a preset Excel file and choose either of import options: Add terms or Replace all terms.

If you select Add terms, all the terms will be added to the glossary, regardless of whether they  already exist in this Smartcat glossary. If you select Replace all terms, all terms within a Smartcat glossary will be deleted, and only after that will the new terms be added. Click the Import button.

Please note that if there are custom fields marked as mandatory in the glossary, they must be entered into the import file ahead of time.

Glossary Export

You can export a glossary to an Excel file. To do this, click the Download button on the glossary page and select the destination for saving the export file.

The exported file will appear in the folder you specified. Note that you’re free to edit it and import it back to Smartcat.
